Quote:
When Shakespeare Must Die, a Thai film adaptation of Macbeth is banned by the Thai government as a threat to national security, the film’s producer treks through the corridors of power to un-ban his Shakespearean horror movie–from the Cultural ministry to the Senate and the National Human Rights Commission, all the way to the Administrative Court where he is suing the government for abuse of power. Wherever he went, amidst political upheaval, his director followed with a camera. The resulting reality cinema is the living story of a struggle for justice and human dignity, for freedom of expression, which Thai filmmakers do not have. A dark cinematic record of democracy in action, in all its farcical, obscene and heartbreaking details.

Phuttiphong Aroonpheng – Kraben rahu AKA Manta Ray (2018) (HD)

Phuttiphong Aroonpheng’s beautiful debut feature, about a Rohingya refugee and the Thai fisherman who rescues him, tells a complex story of friendship with minimalistic ease.
Dedicated to the Rohingya refugees who have perished at sea or were found dead in mass graves, Manta Ray ponders the concepts of identity and foreignness, and the reluctance to welcome “strangers” into our lives.

A fisherman (Wanlop Rungkumjad) living near a coastal village in Thailand, collects stones from the forest to help him catch giant manta rays. A tangled mess of roots, branches, and vines glimmering with twinkling lights, the forest, its surface covered in fallen leaves, hides not only the shiny rocks, but also human bodies, buried in haste. The “mute” (Aphisit Hama), is one of those bodies, except when Nobi finds him, he is alive, covered in mud, and severely injured. The fisherman takes him home, cares for him, and names him Thongchai, after a famous singer.

The fisherman has difficulty communicating with the non-verbal Thongchai, but the two men nevertheless grow fond of each other. When the fisherman suddenly disappears at sea, Thongchai anxiously looks for him around town and on the fishing boats. Unable to find him, he continues to live in the fisherman’s house, fishing in the way he had been taught. His identity blurs into the fisherman’s until one day he’s surprised by an unexpected visitor.

Phuttiphong Aroonpheng is a talent to watch and his debut feature tells a complex story of friendship with minimalistic ease. Images of great beauty accompany the concise dialogue of a simple script that perfectly embraces the narrative style of this jewel-like film.

Tony Rayns, VIFF wrote:
No postman rings twice, but Manop’s gutsy reinvention of the hard-boiled film noir has deep roots in American thrillers of the late 1940s. It comes complete with a criminal ‘hero’, a trashy, ruthless femme fatale and a dog which is forever scratching around where it shouldn’t – not to mention dazzling chiaroscuro compositions and a camera as mobile as the wife’s morals. Salak (Sorasak Wongthai, a perfect cypher of bruised masculinity) is an expert safe-cracker on the run from the police who is offered work as a handyman by garage-owner Boonpreng, a serial husband apparently with very poor taste in wives. The current wife Chanang (Aungkana Timdee, as fatale as they come) learns Salak’s secret and blackmails him into helping her rob Boonpreng’s safe… A seasoned social critic, Manop Udomdej expertly uses generic conventions to deliver a devastating account of crime in a time of materialism and bad faith.

Thunska Pansittivorakul & Harit Srikhao – Homogeneous, Empty Time (2017)

Quote:
This documentary film explores the spread of nationalism according to the concept of “Homogeneous, Empty Time” by Walter Benjamin, a German Jewish philosopher and cultural critic. The theory as referenced in the book Imagined Communities by Benedict Anderson stated that nationalistic ideologies originated from emptiness within an area where people have homogenous consciousness. This film, therefore, explores people in a variety of communities in Thailand, such as high school students, religious people, nationalistic right-wingers, military cadets, and people in the Southern border, in an attempt to find what foundation the Thai nation is formed upon. The film was shot during a time when Thailand was at its most nationalistic, with the military regime and coup leaders in power. It was also a time of great risk as the junta held absolute power in controlling the citizens by means of withholding and manipulating information, controlling people’s behavior and restricting rights, mental and psychological brainwashing, as well as widespread suppression and punishment of any anti-government voices. This left the country with a great number of political prisoners as well as those who have fled in exile.

Quote:
How do you put together the puzzle if the image is missing? You start from individual pieces and see how they fit together. There are the four young actors on a trip to Kanchanaburi, “a city so meaningful, I’d rather die if I don’t get to be with you”, as the song goes. They stay in a hut in the forest by the river, drink on the terrace, talk and watch the fireworks at night, the same scene they later re-enact on the stage set back in Bangkok. The harried young woman is lost in the same forest, or maybe in the young actress’ dream; when the screen splits into two distinct parts, it’s also not clear how they fit together. The foursome came to Kanchanaburi to see the museum, but it’s closed for refurbishment, although they still manage to walk along Hellfire Pass. You can hear the sounds of construction as the scenery rushes past on the train; you can see the rails rush towards you from the window of the theatre set. If you follow the Death Railway back from the west, you reach Bangkok too, which was once home to the Dusit Zoo; the actors also cluck, howl and bark, in city and country alike. What if the missing image isn’t one place or moment in time, but many?

Quote:
It doesn’t look spectacular at first. Two boys each talk separately about their experiences. In the end also on the sexual level. In the end they are also in the room together. In the end they don’t leave it at talking. Remember that homosexuality on film is banned in Thailand and so this film maker has been very daring.

Europeans on sex holidays to Thailand and transvestites who work in tourist areas may give a different impression, but this country is far from liberal in regard to homosexuality. A candid film maker like Thunska Pansittivorakul is therefore sure to come into contact with censorship sooner or later. So anyone who wonders why the two kids in this film keep their pants on right up to the end now knows the answer.

That doesn’t mean that Pansittivorakul is prudish or cautious. You can only call him courageous and maybe even a little obsessed. Sex, gay sex, is his major theme and he has talked plenty of boys out of their clothes for his films.

And he has a very outspoken opinion about other things. The film pointedly tackles several Thai political incidents. These subjects may not be hot off the press, because it took the maker three years to complete the film after it was shot.

The documentary film shows two boys in a hotel room. First they are questioned individually. The first is a Moslem boy from the South. He is asked about politically and personally sensitive issues. He is then followed by a Buddhist boy from the North. Then they are observed chatting together and finally making love.
