Ben Rivers & Anocha Suwichakornpong – Krabi, 2562 (2019)

$

Krabi, 2562 explores the landscape and stories within the community of Krabi, Southern Thailand. A major tourist destination in Thailand, the filmmakers want to capture the town in this specific moment where the pre-historic, the more recent past and the contemporary world collide, sometimes uneasily.

Phuttiphong Aroonpheng – Kraben rahu AKA Manta Ray (2018) (HD)

$

Phuttiphong Aroonpheng’s beautiful debut feature, about a Rohingya refugee and the Thai fisherman who rescues him, tells a complex story of friendship with minimalistic ease.
Dedicated to the Rohingya refugees who have perished at sea or were found dead in mass graves, Manta Ray ponders the concepts of identity and foreignness, and the reluctance to welcome “strangers” into our lives.

A fisherman (Wanlop Rungkumjad) living near a coastal village in Thailand, collects stones from the forest to help him catch giant manta rays. A tangled mess of roots, branches, and vines glimmering with twinkling lights, the forest, its surface covered in fallen leaves, hides not only the shiny rocks, but also human bodies, buried in haste. The “mute” (Aphisit Hama), is one of those bodies, except when Nobi finds him, he is alive, covered in mud, and severely injured. The fisherman takes him home, cares for him, and names him Thongchai, after a famous singer.

The fisherman has difficulty communicating with the non-verbal Thongchai, but the two men nevertheless grow fond of each other. When the fisherman suddenly disappears at sea, Thongchai anxiously looks for him around town and on the fishing boats. Unable to find him, he continues to live in the fisherman’s house, fishing in the way he had been taught. His identity blurs into the fisherman’s until one day he’s surprised by an unexpected visitor.

Phuttiphong Aroonpheng is a talent to watch and his debut feature tells a complex story of friendship with minimalistic ease. Images of great beauty accompany the concise dialogue of a simple script that perfectly embraces the narrative style of this jewel-like film.

Thunska Pansittivorakul – Jutti AKA Reincarnate (2010)

$

Quote:
In separate sketches, Thunska Pansittivorakul shows the homosexual love between a teacher and pupil more explicitly than ever. Several cryptic scenes refer to the oppressive Thai political situation. A clear reaction to the new law that subjected his previous film, This Area Is Under Quarantine (2009), to censorship.

Reincarnate starts with a text: ‘Thailand has since August 2009 banned the screening of sexual acts and genitals in films and anything that damages the interests of the country or causes disharmony in the people’. Thunska Pansittivorakul’s first film, This Area Is Under Quarantine (2009), which was only screened at this festival last year, was the first victim. Images of a violent conflict between the government and Muslim demonstrators did not get past the censor. How can any film maker still show what is happening in his country? In view of the fact that anything can fall under this law, in Reincarnate he shows for the first time flowing sperm. In his previous films, homosexual love was always prominently, but not explicitly present. Alongside separate sketches of the relationship between pupil and teacher, the film is made up of several cryptic scenes that comment on the oppressive political situation, in which all parties only defend their own interests.

A gay love story. A story in the form of a quest. Call it experimental, call it a mixture of documentary and fiction. A very personal film too. It is the director himself who shares his life and feelings with us. Yet it is possibly primarily a political film. The film resists a new law in Thailand that which is going a step further than censorship. Showing certain things (for instance sexual actions) is not only banned, but is also a criminal offence. For a film maker who feels the need to focus on physical passion in his films, there is then a problem. Thunska argues that he would have to give up film making if he could not follow his (artistic and sexual) motivations. A public screening in a cinema in Thailand is out of the question for this film. The film maker would be arrested. It’s ironic that the film maker was given the national Silpathorn award by a previous government as being an important Thai artist.

Uruphong Raksasad – Sawan baan na AKA Agrarian Utopia (2009)

Facing seizure of their own lands, two families find themselves farming together on the same field, hoping just to get through another rice-farming season. But no matter how much the world is evolving, how much the country is going through economic, political, and social changes, they still cannot grasp the new ideology of “happiness.” How can you dream of utopia when your stomach is still grumbling?

Director’s Statement:
Apart from filmmaking, what interests me to an equal extent is agriculture. I feel it is among mankind’s most noble professions.

To compare, in agriculture we get to produce food from the soil for direct consumption, while other occupations only produce us income for buying food.

Modern agriculture is facing problems on many levels, from land ownership to national policy’s focus on economic growth and international competition. What are all these for ultimately? I wonder if globalization forces today have become much more powerful than national governments. I don’t know where it will take us.

Sivaroj Kongsakul – Tee-rak AKA Eternity (2010)

$

Quote:
The sort of love story that can only be believed in Thailand. A man returns after his death to the landscape of his youth and relives the love that was meant for eternity. Even if you don’t believe in reincarnation, it’s a meditative and above all beautiful film.

It is often said that a certain film is atmospheric, but in this case it is more than apt. Eternity is atmospheric, but also poetic and philosophical, or maybe better: spiritual. Life, life after this life and memories of life flow together. Past and present go hand-in-hand like passionate lovers.

The film is made up more or less of three parts and starts with the present. Wit (Wanlop Rungkamjad), a man who recently died – and hence a ghost – is looking for his house in order to follow the footsteps of his life. It is an important act for dead Thais to make sure they can contact loved ones in the afterlife. The present flows almost imperceptibly into the youth of the deceased, the time when Wit was in love with the young teacher Koi (Namfon Udomlertlak). Koi initially has her doubts about whether she wants to spend the rest of her life in the countryside, but soon notices how great Wit’s love for her is. It’s a love which she realises will last forever and will continue after this life. The final section shows an elderly Koi with her children. She has just been widowed and is preparing for a temporary life without her great love.

The filmmaker has stated that he was greatly inspired for Eternity by his own youth and the relationship of his parents. He sees the film as a meditation about the death of a loved one. Paying homage. –Rotterdam

Peasant Riem loves Kwan but the love is not reprocical. He loves singing Likay. Traditional peasant way of life, watching over buffalo, rice planting, getting fish from rice fields, ceremonies where young men invite girls they like to dance, Songkran ceremony with small pagoda made of sand are gracefully shown. They finally love each other with a promise in front of the local deities tree. But Riem family refuses this love story. Choi, local gangster, injures Kwan with his sword making a scar. This scar is the symbol of their love that nothing can break…

“A truly ethnic film, rich in wild passion. Although a melodrama made for the masses, the glorification of passion blending in with rich water scenary, such as in the love scene which ensues while bustling about rice paddy fields with water buffalo, is beautiful and something only a Southeast Asian film could deliver.”
Tadao Sato

The Anthem is a celebration of filmmaking and the viewing experience. In Thailand, before every cinema film screening, there will be a Royal Anthem before the feature presentation. The purpose is to honour the King. It is one of the rituals imbedded in Thai society to give a blessing to something or someone before certain ceremonies. The Anthem presents a ‘Cinema Anthem’ that praises and blesses the approaching feature for each screening. This audio-visual purification process is performed by three old ladies. They also channel energy to the audience in order to give them a clear mind.

A slowly moving camera captures the interiors of various houses in a village. They are all deserted except one house with a group of young soldiers. They are digging the up the ground. It is unclear whether they are exhuming or burying something. The voices of three young men are heard. They repeat, rehearse, memorise a letter to a man named Boonmee. They tell him about a small community called Nabua where the inhabitants have abandoned their homes. The wind blows fiercely through the doors, and the windows, bringing with it a swarm of bugs. As evening approaches, the sky turns dark. The bugs scatter and the men are silent.

A Letter to Uncle Boonmee is part of the multi-platform Primitive project which focuses on a concept of remembrance and extinction set in the northeast of Thailand. Boonmee is the main character of the feature film of the project.

How do you put together the puzzle if the image is missing? You start from individual pieces and see how they fit together. There are the four young actors on a trip to Kanchanaburi, “a city so meaningful, I’d rather die if I don’t get to be with you”, as the song goes. They stay in a hut in the forest by the river, drink on the terrace, talk and watch the fireworks at night, the same scene they later re-enact on the stage set back in Bangkok. The harried young woman is lost in the same forest, or maybe in the young actress’ dream; when the screen splits into two distinct parts, it’s also not clear how they fit together. The foursome came to Kanchanaburi to see the museum, but it’s closed for refurbishment, although they still manage to walk along Hellfire Pass. You can hear the sounds of construction as the scenery rushes past on the train; you can see the rails rush towards you from the window of the theatre set. If you follow the Death Railway back from the west, you reach Bangkok too, which was once home to the Dusit Zoo; the actors also cluck, howl and bark, in city and country alike. What if the missing image isn’t one place or moment in time, but many?(From Berlinale Forum)
